Firstly, can we say Happy Australia Day! Now, whilst here at CTEK and in the rest of Europe we are talking about how warm it is for this time of year, we mustn’t forget motorists on the other side of the world in Australia and New Zealand who, as they approach mid-summer, are experiencing really hot temperatures, in some cases of up to forty degrees.
During the hot summer months vehicle batteries don’t have to work as hard to start the vehicle however, the battery is still working hard powering parasitic loads such as air conditioning and coolers. You therefore still need to regularly charge the battery to ensure that charge is kept above 12.4V – any lower than this and sulphation, the biggest battery killer, will start to happen.
High summer temperatures are one of the biggest killers of batteries in cars. A major factor in this is fluid loss which is a massive problem with sealed batteries; once fluid is lost it cannot be replaced. During the summer months, when temperatures hit 25 degrees and above, batteries need to be charged at a lower voltage. If voltage is too high, the battery boils. The battery becomes unusable due to dried-out cells and crevice corrosion, which occur due to high acid concentration and overheating during charging. To protect against this, many motorists choose to charge at a much lower voltage however, whilst this will protect against overcharging, there is a risk that you end up with an incompletely charged battery that will lose more and more capacity until it gradually becomes unusable.
The most important property of a battery charger therefore is that it reaches the exact voltage during the charging cycle. The CTEK range of smart battery chargers react only to the needs of the battery meaning that they can charge, condition and prolong the life of all types of car battery without the worry of over or under charging, providing the utmost in battery protection.
CTEK chargers accurately read the battery power so that the correct amount of charge levels is given. There’s no need to disconnect the battery whilst charging either, making the process incredibly simple.
So wherever you are in the world, whatever the weather and whatever the vehicle, you still need to regularly charge your battery.
